Building Mercutia, Part I: Wanna Watch Me Work?

I definitely have a process when it comes to building a character, and it certainly doesn’t happen over night. For me, to really know and own a character, it is imperative that I know the entire text in which my particular character is written, especially so I can conjure the perfect backstory, the perfect energy, and the perfect level of subtext before I portray an imagined persona. Sometimes, the objectives and contextual meaning of a character are already pretty clear, meaning less character work. Yes, please do not do unnecessary work for a character if you don’t need to, but, since my latest endeavor is developing the character of Mercutio, or Mercutia (female), it’s gonna take a little bit of work to execute my vision.

So I decided to re-read Romeo and Juliet today, and I will read it several more times so I know it inside and out in order to develop Mercutia as smoothly as possible, but, in this post, I just wanted to provide a rough outline of my vision for this little lady.

Mercutia is:

*Female and flawless.
*Outspoken and proud
*A beautiful comedian/model/wit
*Humanist
*Hilarious
*Creative (especially in the kitchen)
*Shoe lover
*An incorrigible flirt
*A great role model for girls
*Genius
*Hardworking
*Did I mention a remarkable wit? HOW DOES SHE COME UP WITH ALL OF IT?!
*Gold digger (kidding!!!) - she prefers the term “survivor” ;-)
*Supporter of the underdog, yet unafraid to knock the little guy out w/some tough<3
*Loves a glass of (responsible) wine with her girls
*Icon

So there you have it! This is just a rough sketch of what I intend to bring out of Mercutia!
I promise I’ll beef it up, but this is just the beginning.

AND THANKS FOR READING! xx

Subtext: How Do We Bring Text To Life??

Rose Briar
:-)
To bring a piece of text, a beautiful piece of writing, or other body of choreographed words to life is one of the most exhilarating, sometimes addicting, and magical experiences in the world. And since I love that feeling so much, I’d love to teach my readers how to reach that sense of wonder/amazement all their own!! For me, the best way to achieve such a transcendent feeling is by, not only memorizing the words in an artistic piece, but understanding the subtext of those words in that artistic piece. And, yes, I’ve learned the value of this process by our dear hero Constantin Stanislavski.

Stanislavski is pretty much the father of method acting. Of course, we should all beware not to go too far with this process because it can really fuck with your psychology, but if it’s already been corrupted - you have an obligation to let people learn from you and share your own techniques (let those experiences from a kiss of death mean something, after all...). Basically, you need to go in armed if you’re gonna method act, so you can pull yourself out and know that you’re just playing someone when the show’s over, and you don’t deserve this information if you can’t promise me that - Stanislavski would be SO disappointed! Anyway, (not bragging - I’ve just studied alottttabout this) I feel as though I’m at a point as an actress who can lose herself in a role without going crazy anymore - you just really need to understand the method in and out before you embark on it.
So my lesson of the day is teaching you to understand the subtext of a piece the Stanislavskian way.

He was quoted as saying, ““Spectators come to the theatre to hear the subtext. They can read the text at home.” This is very true. How are you, as an actor, a performer, gonna make the audience feel like they’re getting their money’s worth? After all, a member in the audience may have driven hours to come see you, may have spent some kinda pretty penny to come see you, and may have rearranged their hectic schedule solely to come see you. Our dear audience members could've been anywhere else in the world, and they certainly don’t just wanna read the text at home. SO, the best way for me to teach you is to lead by example.
Watch me work...

This is the poem Love and Friendship by Emile Bronte:

Love is like the wild rose-briar,
Friendship like the holly-tree
The holly is dark when the rose-briar blooms
But which will bloom most constantly?

The wild-rose briar is sweet in the spring,
Its summer blossoms scent the air;
Yet wait till winter comes again
And who will call the wild-briar fair?

Then scorn the silly rose-wreath now
And deck thee with the holly's sheen,
That when December blights thy brow
He may still leave thy garland green.

So, say I’m performing it, any audience member could just google the text and read it at home. Why do they want to see me perform this text? Because I did the work to actually see the holly-tree and the rose-briar. I did the work to see the rose briar bloom in the spring, how it grows in the summer, and I can actually smell the scent of the summer blossoms in the air. The audience came to see me perform it because I can deliver those images spectacularly and stimulate all of their five (maybe six?) senses on a level that they cannot achieve by simply reading the text alone at home.

Anyway, all actors are different, so their interpretations of a piece of text are always different, but my interpretation of this poem parallels the famous Marilyn Monroe mantra “If you can’t handle my worst, you’re not getting my best” - and my muses are not simply those who I love in a romantic sense, but those who believe in me and want me to give them a great performance all of the time, (okay so now it’s getting pretty personal...) especially when I feel like I’m not getting much in return right now, or really anything. So, I’d bring this energy to the poem, and, objectively speaking, the audience should know exactly where I’m coming from in my delivery, all the while remaining entertained by the beautiful, transcendent images and feelings I give to them. I equate it to eating cupcakes or something really yummy that they’d want more of!!

So, as you see, I gave this text some subtext, or sub-meaning, that will bring the words to life. Sometimes, the director will tell you specifically what he/she wants within that subtext, or leave you to your own devices to see what you come up with, but this is just my own interpretation, and, yes, I would divide it into beats/define my objectives and super objectives for the performance, but that’s a different blog post.

:-)

Thanks for reading!!!! And how would you interpret or perform this poem??
Let me know and don’t be shy!! x

50 Shades Darker: Who's Its Next Director?!

The global film phenomenon that is "50 Shades of Grey" grossed approximately half a billion dollars worldwide, became a cultural staple almost immediately after its release, and promoted the sometimes taboo topic of sex within our prudish contemporary mainstream. Despite its receipt of negative reviews from critics, the film, directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and based on the novel by E.L. James, has clearly managed some crazy enormous success. Of course, with any such extravagant triumph comes even greater personal sacrifices, which may be the reason why Taylor-Johnson opted out of directing the sequel "50 Shades Darker." (Hey! That's a lot for one woman to handle and she definitely has balls of steel for doing it in the first place!!) But now we're all left with the question of who's gonna direct the next 50 Shades feature, so I took it upon myself to make a few suggestions.

As I embarked on my list of potential directors to helm the next 50 Shades film, one question plagued me: should these directors be male or female? As I thought and thought and thought, I came to the conclusion that they should all be female. And I’m not just saying that because I am a feminist and believe that women should have more of a voice in the current filmmaking culture, but I’m speaking on behalf of Dakota Johnson and I would just feel super creeped out if I had another man gazing at me googly-eyed behind the camera in addition to the already kinda creepy Christian in front of it. So here's my list and I hope you enjoy. Please let me know if you have any of your own suggestions!!

Our dear rebel queen Madonna certainly has no fear when it comes to the projects she embarks on, making her a perfect fit for the "50 Shades Darker" director's seat. Her previous work in 2008's "Filth and Wisdom", a tale about three roommates surviving in London - one a male dominatrix, one a pole dancer, and the other a pharmaceutical assistant,  and then in 2011's "W.E.", a story retelling the love affair between King Edward VIII and his mistress Wallis Simpson, proves that she's unafraid to tackle any love story with a dirty twist. I would love to see what she could come up with in a 50 Shades film.

Miriam Kruishoop is a relative newcomer, gracing us with her filmmaking presence in 2013's"Crosstown," a tale of the American Dream and the setbacks, obstacles, and trials faced by those immigrating into the United States. Though the premise of "Crosstown" varies greatly from any story line in the 50 Shades trilogy, Kruishoop's portrayal of the dynamic between a dominant system against an inferior one, or one that is forced into submission, is definitely a thematic element she could bring to the 50 Shades table.

Rebecca Thomas is known for her work in 2009's "Nobody Knows You, Nobody Gives a Damn", 2012's "Electrick Children", and 2015's "Las Vegas, West". Out of the three, her directorial work in Electrick Children, about a young Mormon girl who believes she lost her innocence to a rock and roll god, makes Thomas a perfect fit for a film in which a naive waif is shown the sexual ropes (no pun intended) by a contemporary Greek god. Thomas could certainly knock out a 50 Shades film, and I'm sure it would be one to watch.

Ana Lily Amirpour blew us all away in "A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night" proving that she's fearless in the face of sexual innuendos, hardcore actor gazing, and an even more intense sexual atmosphere (while still promoting a very feminist perspective - girl crush? YES). The notion that sometimes power lies in those who are more seemingly submissive, or subordinate for that matter, yet still have an ability to exert dominance is very intriguing.   I think she could really bring some crazy feminist energy to the character of Ana, and, who knows, maybe she'll be the one putting Christian in his place the next film...

Anja Marquardt's most recent work in "She's Lost Control," about a young surrogate and how she deals, understands, and defines sex, proves that she can definitely deal with characters who have issues when it comes to intercourse and how they need contracts when it comes to actually doing it, whether written or unwritten (um, hello Christian?). I'm really skirting around the spoilers, but yes, in "She's Lost Control" the main girl also requires a contract when it comes to the act of procreation. Marquardt could certainly handle the complexities and complications of the characters in 50 Shades.

So there you have it! My list of directors to helm the upcoming "50 Shades Darker" - please let me know if you think I've missed anyone out and don't be shy about voicing your own, unique opinion on the ones I've listed!

 And, as always,

THANKS FOR READING!! x

The Beautiful Brain: What Are You Feeding Yours??

Whole Grains!! Yum!
Every success story is riddled with obstacles, mini-triumphs, greater let downs, and ugly ego wringers. The best of us come through this painful process stronger, whereas the worst of us crush under its stinging pressure (I have felt the pangs of both so, please, trust me on that one...Oh, this crazy little cycle).

Anyway, As I've struggled and grown through these experiences, I have really learned that I must, under all circumstances, refrain from inflicting any unnecessary obstacles on myself that I could really do without, one of them being poor nutrition. My brain will literally refuse to work if I do not take care of it properly and, being the busy body that I was born to be, I feel like my soul is dying when I cannot put my mind to good use. And, no, I do not have any major mental issues - or ones that require the daily consumption of medication. Trust me, I've been tested, poked, and prodded left and right. I just have anxiety and ADD - and I only take the meds as needed, but I've discovered that I don't need them as much when I eat healthy and avoid alcohol.

So, I've been researching, doing my homework, and really learning about the human body, and I'm convinced that I have a thyroid issue. For those who don't know (not trying to sound condescending because I really only truly learned and understood the thyroid this week), but the thyroid is basically a goddess planted in your human body. She works really, really hard for you so you better treat her right!! Dare to ignore her? Enjoy suffering the consequences of her wrath, either by her acting up, or not acting at all. For me, she chose to stop working, causing me to suffer from fatigue, depression, anxiety, irritability, and overall naughtiness. ;-)

I would still love to see a nutritionist to further confirm my suspicions about my under active thyroid, or hypothyroidism (an overactive thyroid is labelled hyperthyroidism), but I've already adopted a diet catering to the needs of this little adrenal gland that does a big job for my body and I feel a million times better. So, I would love to share some of the foods and vitamins I've been eating with all of you, here they are: (and I know it's better to eat your vitamins in actual food, but I'm on a budget, so..) :P

1. Coconut Oil
2. Vitamin C
3. Vitamin B
4. Seafood w/ Omega-3
5. Kombucha (my magic potion)
6. Avoiding sugar and gluten in processed, non-organic foods
7. Whole Grains

These are just a few examples of what I've been intaking to help heal my thyroid!! I already feel better and my skin looks so much younger/healthier! I still need to stick with my diet for awhile to see the full impact of these foods/vitamins, but I am, no question, seeing results.

So, do you have any more suggestions of what could help? Or do you have any other organs in your own beautiful body that you need to pay a little more attention to in order for them to do their jobs? If so, what foods do you eat to heal and cleanse??

Let me know and don't be shy!!!
